In our household, everybody is connected, in some way, to the web most of the time.
My dad goes online primarily to check e-mails and read the news. My mom, on the other hand, is always video chatting with my sister in California over facetime. As for me, I’m online 24/7.
The aforementioned scenario is an example of what PLDT VP and head of PLDT myDSL Gary Dujali describes as a digital lifestyle and this is what his company seeks to cater with the new PLDT myDSL WiFi Modem.
Launched in October of last year, the PLDT myDSL modem-router lets users simultaneously enjoy high speed internet at home from multiple devices using both wired and wireless connections.
Ria Jose of TechnoMaria.com sent me a unit for testing and I have to say I’m impressed by how easy it was to setup and how good it performed. It worked flawlessly as advertised.
Setting it up was a no-brainer. The thing actually came with a CD and a quick-start guide but it wasn’t necessary as it was basically a “plug-and-play” affair.
If you’re not comfortable setting up wireless networks, here’s a quick rundown of steps I took:
1. I attached the telephone wire, plugged it in, and powered it up.
2. After a few seconds, my computer detected the WiFi signal from the modem-router.
3. I typed in the default WEP password which is posted at the bottom of the router.
4. Next, I launched my browser which triggered the modem-router to configure itself automatically by testing my internet connection.
5. It then showed the following screen which meant that I was good to go.
For the technically-inclined, the PLDT MyDSL modem-router is actually a ZyXEL P-660HN-F1A ADSL Router with four Ethernet ports and IEEE 802.11 N wireless capability. The admin page is accessible by going to http://192.168.1.1 where stuff like the SSID and WiFi password can be configured.
I tested my internet connection speed against PLDT’s server and the result was decent.
Having experienced “picky” routers before where some of my devices were unable to connect to the wireless network, I made sure to test all of my devices with it. I’m glad to report that all of my gadgets at home were able to connect without a hitch. Devices tested include:
- MacBook Pro (WiFi/Wireless)
- HP Pavilion DV6 (WiFi/Wireless)
- iPod touch 4th Gen (WiFi/Wireless)
- iPhone 1st Gen (WiFi/Wireless)
- LG Optimus One (WiFi/Wireless)
- Popcorn Hour (Cat5/Wired)
- Desktop Computer (Cat5/Wired)
For households that are yet to setup a home WiFi network, the PLDT myDSL WiFi + Modem is an attractive choice from both the technical and economic standpoint. Since it practically combines two devices into one, that’s one less device to purchase and configure.

If you mean upgrade the unit itself, I don’t think you can do that but you can replace it with this one. The price of the WiFi-modem depends on your dsl plan.
may i know what is your dsl plan? because the result of the speed test is really good!
I’m not sure what my plan is called but it’s not one of the bundled plans. I pay for DSL on top of my regular phone bill.

Yes, it does. The WiFi network is protected using WEP.
no wpa or wpa2?
I don’t think you can call WEP “protection”. WEP is considered insecure and can easily be hacked. So does it have WPA or WPA2?
Unfortunately, it only has WEP.
The new model “ZXV10 W300″ has WPA2-PSK protection. currently using it now and it’s great =)
how’s the range? is it good? can you use it in another room?
It’s as good as any 802.11N wireless router. Indoors, it can reach up to 25 meters. Yes you can connect to the WiFi even when connecting from another room.
In my case, I was able to connect even from outside the house.

You can change the wifi password in the admin page of the router. You can go to the admin page by typing http://192.168.1.1 in your browser while connected to the wifi network.

I’m having trouble connecting my ipod-touch to the wifi. Other devices like laptops and a CheryQ mobile can connect through wifi.
Customer service replied that they do not know the configuration for this modem-wifi in one.
Need help. Any suggestions?
That’s strange. My iPod touch connects just fine. Anyway, here are some ideas:
1. Check if you typed the WEP password correctly.
If you didn’t change the default password on the modem-router, then make sure to type the password in ALL CAPS.
2. Reset the saved WiFi connection on your iPod touch.
You can do this by going to Settings > WiFi > PLDT MyDSL, tap on the blue circle near the wifi symbol, tap Forget this Network then try connecting again.
3. Reset the network settings on your iPod touch
Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings then try connecting again.
4. Make sure your iPod touch is running on the latest firmware from Apple (v4.3.2 for the latest iPod touch)
This is a bad modem you will only waste your money. They will only offer to replace your modem no refund. I had mine replaced twice and had a technician come in twice as well. Losing connection on both computers hardwired and wifi. If you w…ant to keep on power cycling your modem every 30mins to an hr to get your connection back then buy this modem. Waste of time, money and as a bonus you get a headache for all the trouble. I suggest you stick to their old modem and buy a router instead. This is a faulty device which pldt released!
it only uses WEP? no WPA or WPA2?

Hi! Question, does this WiFi router enable file sharing as well? Like a LAN connection between comps that a regular router can do.

Plan 990 is not ideal for video uploading. You should consider getting a plan with at least 3 mpbs.

The modem with phone line is much better compared with the modem wifi pldt is giving away and the security of their routers are pretty weak O_O

I have a question po. I have the experience 99plan, 1.5mbps. now the problem is the router. PLDT provided us with a free router and its range is very much limited. I also have TP link router at home its range is very good. now I want to ask if we can change the router… i tried it, but the WLAN port is not supported.

hindi nmn mas mataas ang plan ng upload between 999/2k/3k/ naka 5mbps DL ako ngaun. pero .7 UL pren. nung naka 999 ako. 1mbps DL at .7 UL pren.
